Now is the time to create a facility that will serve generations

The next step of our building process is deciding what’s going inside the new building. We call this “programing.” We need to figure out what must we do to “program” a facility that will not only serve today’s students but generations to come.

In the programming process, we need to decide questions like the following:
  • Classrooms – How many tiered classrooms do we need? How many flat classrooms? How many 80 seat? How many 55 seat? How many 40 seat?
  • How many meeting rooms should we have for our students to use?
  • Should we have a business library? With books and magazines, or just electronic kiosks?
  • Should we have a café? How about a food court? Should we have a coffee shop?
  • What kind of student lounges should we have? Should we have both an undergraduate and a graduate student lounge?
  • How many computer labs do we need?
  • What types of classroom technologies should be standard in our classrooms?
  • Do we need another auditorium that is centrally located for big events? Should it be bigger or smaller than the one we currently use in the Eccles building?
  • Should we have a store that would carry official Huntsman merchandise?

  2. I think having a lounge where students can hang out would be great. If you think about, there's not really a hang out spot like most universities-- maybe the library... or Wal Mart.

    I think the library provides ample space for most student groups to meet together and study, but another meeting room like the one in the business building lobby would be handy.

    A business library would be excellent. I'm sure the students will devour publications like Forbes, Bloomberg, Entrepreneur, the Economist, and the Wall Street Journal. A good collection of books would also be great. I'm probably not the only student who's sat on the floor in the business section of Barnes and Noble flipping through books and trying to justify buying a few.

    I'm not a coffee drinker, but I vote for a coffee shop of our very own. We may want to do a study to find out what majors frequent Cafe Ibis the most- I'll bet business majors.
    Seattle is a start-up mecca in part because there's a Starbucks on almost every corner- a place where people get together to throw ideas around.

    ONE student lounge, but maybe with a designated grad section.

    And definitely a Huntsman store. The only problem is that we need to brand our school better, in a way that truly sets us apart from the rest of the university. It should also carry the necessities for class, because we all hate having to walk all the way over to the TSC to buy a scantron.

  4. This is something small, but I really like the drinking fountains that have water bottle spouts similar to the one on the main floor of the TSC.

    I don't want to draw comparisons with the Blue U down south, but I have to admit...their business building rocks. Now, I have only been there once, and it was a disappointing experience, but I really like the open feel. It is kind of like the openness of the education building and the new library. I would be a huge fan of grad lounges and more informal student meeting and sitting spaces.

  6. All of these ideas mentioned sound great. How much space do we have to work with for classroom size?

    I definitely know what it DOES NOT need. A ton of 50" flat TVs that nobody watches and serve no purpose.

  7. I would LOVE to have an delicious dining option in the building. I think the Huntsman School could make a LOT of money if we had a Jamba Juice!
